Political career

Karin Strenz (2016)

From 1999 Strenz represented her party in the Parchimer district council . In 2001 she was elected chairman of the CDU district association Parchim and has since headed the CDU district parliamentary group. From 1999 to 2005 she was a member of the CDU state executive committee for Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania . From 2001 to 2005 she was the deputy chairwoman of the regional association. In 2002 Strenz was elected to the state parliament for the first time . As a direct candidate, she lost in her constituency Parchim II with 30.0% of the first votes against the SPD candidate Harald Ringstorff with 48.5% of the first votes, but moved into the state parliament with her fourth place on the list. In the 2006 state elections, Strenz lost the direct election again against the SPD candidate. Due to the lower 10th place on the list this time, Strenz initially missed entry into the state parliament. On November 5, 2007, she replaced the resigned MP Kerstin Fiedler-Wilhelm . Strenz was labor market policy spokeswoman for the CDU parliamentary group.

In the 2009 Bundestag election , Strenz moved into the German Bundestag via the direct mandate in constituency 12 and resigned from her Landtag mandate in November 2009. Her successor was André Specht . In the Bundestag she sits as a full member of the Defense Committee and the Sports Committee . She is the chair of the German-South Caucasian parliamentary group.

Strenz received 43.0% of the first votes in the 2013 federal election. In the 2017 Bundestag election, 30.0% of the first votes in constituency 13 were sufficient for the direct mandate.

Allegations of corruption and fraudulent voting

Strenz stated that he had received at least 15,000 euros from the company Line M-Trade (managed by the former CSU politician and lawyer Eduard Lintner ) in 2014 and 2015 , without giving a reason for these payments. The company is considered a financier of Azerbaijani lobbying.

In 2015, she was the only German MEP to vote in the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe against a demand for the release of political prisoners in Azerbaijan. After the publication of these accusations by Süddeutsche Zeitung and Report Mainz , the SPD member of the Bundestag Frank Schwabe accused them of corruption. He also accused her of having falsely stated that she had no conflicts of interest when she certified that the Azerbaijani government had a democratic parliamentary election as part of an election observation mission. Strenz responded to Schwabe's allegations through her lawyer with a warning . Schwabe stuck to his accusations and announced that he would also want to defend them in court. Strenz's claim that he did not know that Line M-Trade worked for the Azerbaijani government was contradicted by its former managing director Eduard Lintner.

According to the rules of the Bundestag, Strenz should have reported M-Trade's income as ancillary income within three months. It was only at the end of February 2016, more than a year after receipt, that she reported the amount to the Bundestag administration. In response to a request from the NDR, Strenz said that she had wanted to wait for her tax return and the tax assessment to be given to the Bundestag. The association LobbyControl accused Strenz of cheating. The belated publication of her part-time earnings obscured the fact that she had business interests in Azerbaijan. If she had published the income in accordance with the rules, she would not have been allowed to serve as an election observer for the Council of Europe in Azerbaijan in June 2015.

She added her position as deputy chairman of the interest organization 'German-Kazakh Society' belatedly in her Bundestag profile.

The CDU / CSU parliamentary group no longer appointed Strenz to the new parliamentary delegation at the Council of Europe in 2017.

According to a report by a commission of inquiry published on April 22, 2018, numerous active and former members of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe are suspected of corruption , including Strenz.

In 2019, the Bundestag complained to Strenz that she had only reported subsidies that had to be published and received from a German company in Azerbaijan after the notification period had expired. The Presidium of the Bundestag imposed a fine of around 20,000 euros. In doing so, Parliament made it clear that it was a deliberate and serious violation of the rules applicable to members of parliament.

On January 30, 2020, the German Bundestag lifted Karin Strenz's immunity at the request of the Frankfurt am Main public prosecutor's office . As a result, her parliamentary office and her private home were searched. The background is investigations into suspected bribery, bribery of elected officials and money laundering against Strenz as well as the former CSU member of the Bundestag Eduard Lintner , in the course of which a total of 16 objects were searched.
