No flight

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In the case of a flight ban (English: grounding), the use of aircraft is prohibited. Flight bans can be issued for the area of activity of an airfield , depending on certain times (e.g. night flight ban ) or for certain types of aircraft.

A flight ban for a certain type is usually imposed in connection with one or more unexplained accidents or when a serious defect in the affected aircraft type is discovered. Well-known examples of this are the flight bans for the McDonnell Douglas DC-10 , the Boeing 787 or the Boeing 737 MAX in 2019. If the defect is not remedied, the type certificate (TC) will be withdrawn.

Flight bans for aircraft are often referred to with the English term aircraft grounding . They can be expressed in the event of technical, legal or financial problems of the aircraft operator.

Areas in which the operation of aircraft is wholly or partially prohibited are referred to as air restricted areas , restricted flights or no-fly zones , depending on the reason and extent of the ban .
