The premiere took place on January 23, 2020 as part of the Max Ophüls Preis film festival , where the film was invited to the competition and awarded the Feature Film Audience Award. The Austrian theatrical release was originally planned for April 17, 2020 and was postponed to October 2, 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic .

action

Eight-year-old Oskar and 13-year-old Lilli are two Chechen refugee children who have been living with their mother in Austria for six years. When the three of them are caught by the police in Vienna and are to be deported, the mother tries to take her own life.

The suicide attempt causes a postponement of the deportation, but also the separation of the children who come to different foster families. Despite their separation, Oskar and Lilli keep in touch and decide to find their mother and flee together.

Production and Background

The shooting took place from July 2 to August 18, 2018 in Vienna and Lower Austria , and the shooting took place in Vienna- Favoriten , among others . The film was supported by the Austrian Film Institute , the Vienna Film Fund and the Province of Lower Austria , and the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation was involved . The film was produced by Wega Film . Atanas Tcholakov was responsible for the sound and sound design, Monika Buttinger for the costume design, and Katrin Huber and Gerhard Dohr for the production design .

Director and screenwriter Arash T. Riahi saw the film as the second part of an “escape trilogy” that he began with A Moment of Freedom (2008) and would like to conclude with a tragedy with the working title A Story of the Heart . In contrast to the film, the novel Oskar and Lilli by Monika Helfer , published in 1994, is not about refugee children; in the original, Oskar and Lilli lost their home due to a mental illness of their mother. However, Riahi wanted to make a political film. As a child, he emigrated from Iran to Austria with his parents and had found a lot of him in the character of Oscar.
