David Kabua

David Kabua (* 1951 ) is a Marshallese politician and acting President of the Marshall Islands . He is the son of the first president, Amata Kabua .

He was educated at Xavier High School, Micronesia and the University of Hawaii . From 2008 to 2011 he was Senator for the Wotho Atoll . From 2012 to 2013 he was Minister of Health and Minister of the Interior in 2014. In January 2016, he became Secretary of State for the President of the Marshall Islands.

On January 6, 2020, Kabua was elected President of the Marshall Islands by parliament by 20 votes to 12 with one abstention. He succeeded Hilda Heine , who aspired to a second term, but was eliminated in the first ballot. Kabua said fighting climate change , negotiating with the US over the 2023 funding agreement and handling Runit Dome were top priorities of his presidency. He was sworn in on January 13, 2020.
