Jurelang Zedkaia

Jurelang Zedkaia (born July 13, 1950 in Majuro , Ratak chain , † October 7, 2015 ibid) was a traditional Marshallic tribal leader and politician. On October 26, 2009 Jurelang Zedkaia was elected fifth President of the Marshall Islands with 17:15 votes and was sworn in on November 2, 2009.

Life

Zedkaia was the Iroij or traditional chief of the Majuro Atoll , where the country's capital is also located. He worked in the pharmaceutical sector and in the administration of the Majuro Atoll Local Government (MALGOV) as a councilor for health, education and social affairs. Before being elected president, Zedkaia was a senator in the lower house of the Parliament of the Marshall Islands ( Nitijeļā ) for five years . He was the deputy government spokesperson before being elected government spokesperson in January 2008.

On October 21, 2009 his predecessor Litokwa Tomeing was defeated by a vote of no confidence with 17:15 votes. The President of Parliament appointed Ruben Zackhras as the incumbent president, who held the office until Zedkaias was sworn in.

Zedkaia and former President Kessai Note were the only candidates for the presidency in 2009. Zedkaia nominated Alvin Jacklick for the post of government spokesman, who was confirmed unanimously.

Jurelang Zedkaia died on the evening of October 7, 2015 in Majuro as a result of a heart attack.
