Amata Kabua

Amata Kabua (born November 17, 1928 - December 20, 1996 in Hawaii ) was a politician in the Marshall Islands . He had been president of the archipelago from May 1, 1979, and remained so for five terms until his death.

Kabua began his professional career as a teacher before becoming chief of Majuro Atoll . After the proclamation of the republic, parliament elected him first president. Kabua was one of the most important negotiators in the fight for the independence of the Marshall Islands.

He is also responsible for the lyrics and music of Forever Marshall Islands , the national anthem of the Pacific state.

Kabua died on December 20, 1996 after a long illness. The official business was initially carried out by Kunio Lemari . In January 1997, Kabua's cousin Imata Kabua was elected to succeed him.
