A total of 36 seats

The election of the 36 members to the 22nd state parliament in Burgenland took place on January 26, 2020.

There were 250,181 eligible voters. The early election day was January 17, 2020. On this day, at least one polling station in every municipality in Burgenland was open for at least two hours.

After the " Ibiza Affair " became known in May 2019, Governor Hans Peter Doskozil announced an early election . Originally the election should have taken place in May 2020

With gains and almost 50% of the votes, the SPÖ achieved an absolute majority with 19 out of 36 mandates. The ÖVP remained the second strongest party with 11 mandates, the FPÖ received 4 mandates with losses, the Greens stayed with 2 mandates.

Starting position

After the " Ibiza Affair " became known in May 2019, Thomas Steiner , regional party leader of the ÖVP Burgenland , called for new elections parallel to the 2019 National Council election and at the same time ruled out a coalition with the FPÖ Burgenland. On May 19, 2019, Governor Hans Peter Doskozil (SPÖ) announced early elections, the date of which was to be determined with the FPÖ, finally it was January 26, 2020.

Originally, the election should have taken place in May 2020. The elections thus took place just four months before the actual election date. Both coalition parties were satisfied with red-blue. In August 2019, the Burgenland FPÖ boss even wanted the Burgenland SPÖ governor as Federal Chancellor.

The two governing parties SPÖ and FPÖ had a turbulent year 2019 at the federal level. Doskozil's goal was therefore a plus in the end result. The ÖVP Burgenland wanted to participate in government again. That is what the Greens wanted in a coalition with the SPÖ. For NEOS and LBL it was about entering the state parliament.

Electoral parties and candidates

The following six parties competed:

  • The SPÖ Burgenland entered with Governor Hans-Peter Doskozil under the name List Doskozil - SPÖ Burgenland . In a member survey, a clear majority of 49 percent was in favor of continuing the controversial red-blue coalition with freedom, 40 percent were for cooperation with the Greens and 19 percent for a government with the ÖVP.
  • The ÖVP Burgenland entered the race with the mayor of the state capital Eisenstadt , Thomas Steiner , as the top candidate. The election campaign through the seven districts started with the “Turquoise Truck Tour”. The ÖVP ran under the name Die Neue Volkspartei - Team Burgenland .
  • The FPÖ Burgenland again stood at the FPÖ's head of state with Deputy Governor Johann Tschürtz . At the beginning of June 2019, the FPÖ state party executive decided on him as the top candidate. The Freedom Party strived for gains and want to continue the SPÖ-FPÖ coalition.
  • The Green Burgenland competed with party leader Regina Petrik . On April 6, 2019, she was elected the top candidate of the Greens for the 2020 state elections. The Greens wanted to win at least one mandate and thus achieve club status. In addition, they wanted to move into the state government instead of the FPÖ.
  • The LBL started with Manfred Kölly , the mayor of Deutschkreutz , as the listener. The aim was to gain more mandates. In second place was Jörg Steiner, the former chairman of the BZÖ . In addition, some former freedom candidates ran for the other places, including the ex-office manager of Deputy Governor Tschürtz.
  • The NEOS Burgenland as a candidate of their federal organization with the support they wanted for "fresh air" care in the state parliament. The main themes of the pinks were transparency and control. The Pinkafelder councilor Eduard Posch was elected as the top candidate in December 2019.

The KPÖ did not run for office. She justified her decision with the too high hurdles and sees herself as an “activist party”. The CPÖ did not run either.
