The state election in Burgenland was carried out on December 3, 2000 and was the 19th state election in the state of Burgenland . The Social Democratic Party of Austria (SPÖ) was able to expand its first place in this brought forward new election and hold the relative majority with 17 seats. The Austrian People's Party (ÖVP) suffered slight losses and lost one of its 14 seats to date. The Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ) also lost votes and one of its original five mandates. The big winners of the election were Die Grünen Burgenland (GRÜNE), who gained 3 percentage points and entered the state parliament for the first time with 2 mandates.

The Parliament of the XVIII. The legislative period was constituted on December 28, 2000 and on that day elected the Niessl I state government under the new governor Hans Niessl , who succeeded the Stix II state government .
