State election in Burgenland 1956
The state election in Burgenland 1956 was carried out on May 13, 1956 and was the 8th state election in the Austrian state of Burgenland . In the elections, the Austrian People's Party (ÖVP), which had lost its absolute majority in the state elections in 1953 , was able to stabilize and, with a plus of 0.8 percentage points, achieved a share of the votes of 49.2% and again 16 of the 32 mandates. The Socialist Party of Austria (SPÖ) profited from the losses of the Communist Party of Austria(KPÖ) and was able to gain around 1.3 percentage points as well as one mandate. With a share of the vote of 46.0%, the SPÖ achieved 15 seats and thus posted its best result to date in a state election in Burgenland. The Freedom Party of Austria , which had appeared for the first time and succeeded the electoral party of the Independent (WdU), achieved 2.9% and was able to hold the mandate of the WdU. The KPÖ, however, failed with a minus of 1.3 percentage points and a share of the vote of 1.9% in the entry into the state parliament.
The state parliament of the eighth legislative period was constituted on June 11, 1956 and elected the state government of Johann Wagner I on June 22, 1956 .
