The provincial government Stix II under governor Karl Stix (SPÖ) forms the Burgenland provincial government from the election by the Burgenland Landtag in the XVII. Legislative period on 27 June 1996 to the swearing-in of the state government Niessl I December 28, 2000th

After the Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ) gained in the state elections in 1996 , Wolfgang Rauter, a representative of the FPÖ, entered the state government for the first time. The Social Democratic Party of Austria (SPÖ) lost one member of the state parliament and, like the Austrian People's Party (ÖVP), had three members of the state government. While the governor and his deputy remained identical to the previous government, there were changes among the state councils. Hermann Fister (SPÖ) resigned because the seat of government had been lost to the FPÖ, while Eduard Ehrenhöfler (ÖVP) was replaced by Karl Kaplan . During the term of office of the Stix II state government, Wolfgang Rauter resigned from his office on November 5, 1997, and Gabriel Wagner was elected to the state government for him the following day . On March 17, 1999, Josef Tauber (SPÖ) gave up his post, and on March 18, he was succeeded by Helmut Bieler , a member of the state parliament . Also Christa Prets resigned on 18 May 1999 from the government and changed to the European Parliament, for them the former Member of Parliament was on May 19, Peter Rezar elected successor.
