Tauber was born the son of the iron bender Viktor Tauber and attended elementary and secondary school in Großpetersdorf. Then he learned the trade of bricklayer, where he trained as a construction technician at the two-year technical-commercial evening school. In 1959 he did his military service in the Austrian Armed Forces and then graduated from the foremen's school for civil engineering between 1960 and 1964. He was also employed as a construction foreman in Vienna from 1961 to 1975 and was promoted to site manager in 1974. In 1975 he moved to Großpetersdorf as a hardware store manager of a building materials wholesaler, and in July 1976 he became the union secretary for the construction and woodworkers of the district office of the Austrian Trade Union Federation for the Oberwart district .

Tauber was already a councilor in Großpetersdorf from 1969 and rose to the parish council in 1976. Between 1982 and 1993 he held the office of mayor. In addition, he was active within the party from 1976 as SPÖ local party chairman and in 1995 took over the function of SPÖ district party chairman. Tauber was a member of the Burgenland Landtag between January 18, 1982 and March 17, 1993, and then from March 18, 1993 to March 17, 1999, he was a member of the state governments of Stix I and Stix II .

After leaving state politics, Tauber remained active in municipal politics and stood again for the SPÖ in the 2007 municipal council elections . Before that, he was only just inferior to the incumbent mayor Winfried Kasper in a battle vote for first place on the list.

In January 2012 Tauber was appointed Deputy Mayor by the Großpetersdorf City Council. He held this position until the municipal council election on October 7, 2012. In the local council election on October 7th, the now 72-year-old was re-elected to the local council by the population. When the newly elected municipal council was constituted, he was confirmed as treasurer with the management of the municipal finances. Tauber is therefore the oldest and longest serving politician in Burgenland.
