Activity as mayor of the state capital of Freistadt Eisenstadt

Thomas Steiner is the 13th mayor of the state capital of Freistadt Eisenstadt.

Mag. Thomas Steiner has been the town councilor of Eisenstadt since 2007, in 2011 he took over the office of mayor of Eisenstadt from Andrea Fraunschiel. When he took office, Thomas Steiner laid down his guiding principle: work, decide and bring something forward for Eisenstadt. The focus was and is on the city's steady growth: between 2001 and 2011 alone, the population increased by 16 percent. This led to the setting of priorities, especially in the areas of education as well as transport and infrastructure, with the involvement of all citizens.

In 2013, with the involvement of the population and experts, the development of the urban development plan STEP 2030 began, which represents a model for the further development of the city.

A milestone for public transport was set with the introduction of the city bus. The planning for this began in 2015, at the end of 2016 three bus lines started operating, and a fourth line has now been added.

Numerous initiatives in the areas of the environment, health, safety and social issues have been taken to raise the quality of life and raise awareness of the city. After the previous system of proportional representation for the occupation of the state government was abolished in Burgenland by the state constitutional law in 2014, a free government was formed for the first time after the state elections in 2015. This change in electoral law stipulated that the party with the strongest votes would invite government negotiations with potential coalition partners after the election. The previous governor, Hans Niessl , decided on Wednesday evening after the election to only conduct coalition negotiations with the FPÖ.

In 2015, for the first time since 1945, the New People's Party of Burgenland was not in the Burgenland state government, but in opposition .

Under Thomas Steiner as regional party leader, the ÖVP embarked on a reform course and repositioned itself in Burgenland. The ÖVP Burgenland joined the new path of the federal ÖVP under Sebastian Kurz and has been operating under the name of the New People's Party Burgenland and the party color turquoise since 2018 . The individual citizens' offices were merged into regional offices and a "plan for Burgenland" was drawn up.
