Gerald Handig (born November 26, 1963 ) is an Austrian politician of the Austrian People's Party (ÖVP). Since 2007 he has been the mayor of the municipality of Edelstal and since February 17, 2020 a member of the Burgenland state parliament . Before his career as a politician, Handig was a professional soccer player .

Life

education and profession

Gerald Handig moved after graduation in 1982 to army and graduated from the Theresian Military Academy in Wiener Neustadt . In 1992 he was as FIA Offizer the air defense of Langenlebarn retired . Further stations were Groß-Enzersdorf and Hainburg an der Donau . After several years as battery and barracks commander, he took over the management of the Königswarte telecommunications reconnaissance system in September 2000 with the rank of major .

Career as a football player

In the 1983/84 season Handig came to two missions for SC Neusiedl am See in the 1st division , the highest Austrian league. After two games for Burgenland, he left the first division again. From 1986 to 1991 he was active at SC Edelstal . In 1991 he was deregistered from gaming. In January 1992 the SV Hundsheim reported him . For the 1999/2000 season he returned to Edelstal, where he is still active today. He has also been president of the association since 2014.

politics

Handig is the local ÖVP party chairman in Edelstal . After the municipal council election in 2007 , he succeeded Anton Moritz (SPÖ) as mayor of the Edelstal municipality. In the 2019 National Council election, he ran for the ÖVP in 57th place on the federal list, eighth in the Burgenland regional constituency and third in the Burgenland North regional constituency .

In the early state elections in Burgenland 2020 , he ran for state electoral district 1 ( Neusiedl am See district ) behind Markus Ulram and Christine Riepl in third place on the list. Handig overtook Christine Riepl and gained a basic mandate in the Neusiedl am See district alongside Ulram. On February 17, 2020, he was appointed at the constituent meeting of the XXII. Legislative period as a member of the Burgenland Landtag , where he became a member of the State Audit Office Committee and acts as a deputy chairman of the Immunity and Incompatibility Committee.
