In Austria, retirement is understood as the completion of military or police training with discharge from service.

To the subject

Contrary to the meaning in Germany and Switzerland, where the word denotes the declaration of unsuitability during the examination , corresponding to the general meaning of the removal of unsuitable material, the word in the Austrian military language denotes the opposite, namely the inclusion in the active one Service . The reason is the way of looking at whether the armed forces or the able-bodied are being considered. In the second case, in an old meaning, those who are put into military service are “removed from the crowd” when they are recruited. Outside of Austria, this meaning has died out due to the lack of understanding. In the imperial army, the term was particularly in relation toCadet schools , where, if necessary, those who are ready and fit for active service are retired, with which the leaving school has to be supplemented with new recruits (which is why the department responsible for the position is still called a supplementary department to this day ).

Retirement in today's armed forces

Today, retirement is understood to mean the solemn graduation of the years in the vocational training of officers at the Theresian Military Academy and NCOs at the Army NCOs Academy . These are celebrated as a retirement ceremony in a public ceremony with a parade of the graduates, usually with a big tattoo , and in the presence of high commanders or the defense minister .

In addition, this is the name given to the completion of the general basic training of conscripted basic military servants with the swearing-in , which is also usually celebrated in public today.

The decommissioning enjoys a certain popularity as a sight, and the presentation of those employed serves the armed forces as a representation of its presence and loyalty to the people as a militia army , as well as the responsibility of the military personnel towards the republic - pure military parades at celebrations are rare in Austria.
