history
The first graduates of the Theresian Military Academy left the same in 1755, from then until the end of the First World War in 1918, 10,966 officer candidates graduated from the academy. During the period of the First Republic , from 1923 to 1938, 986 lieutenants completed their training, after the Second World War by 1965 there were 904. From their founding in 1751 up to and including the year 2008, a total of 16,261 officers completed their careers at the Wiener Neustädter Military Academy .
It was not until 1966 that the retired classes of the Theresian Military Academy had names that recall well-known people, events or theaters of war in the military history of Austria or Austria-Hungary. This idea was first implemented by the “Lissa” class and goes back to a visit by a delegation from the Theresian Military Academy to the French academy, the Saint-Cyr Military School , in 1964. The tradition of the annual exchange of Austrian military academics with those of other countries, such as from the USA , Sweden or France , had existed for a long time and so on the aforementioned visit in 1964 the participants were given the year badge of the French military academy when they parted. The motif was the battle of Camerone in Mexico on April 30, 1863, which is related to Austrian history , as the battle cleared the way for the reign of the Mexican Emperor Maximilian I , brother of the Austrian Emperor Franz Joseph , in Mexico .
Inspired by this tradition of the French Military Academy, the introduction of a year badge at the Theresian Military Academy was suggested after the delegation's return. For naming, battle scenes or names of personalities who played a special role in Austrian military history should be used, and a time reference should be established when choosing the year name, whereby the first year of this type in 1966 suggested the sea battle exactly 100 years ago von Lissa , in which Rear Admiral Wilhelm von Tegetthoff defeated an Italian fleet .
