Maximilian Ritter von Rodakowski (born April 9, 1825 in Lemberg , † December 12, 1900 in Graz ) was an Austrian officer .

Life

Rodakowski entered the Imperial and Royal Engineering Academy in 1836 and was retired as a cadet for Uhlan Regiment No. 4 in 1843 . In 1844 he was promoted to lieutenant and in 1847 to first lieutenant .

He took part in the Italian campaign of 1848/49 and was involved in the Battle of Sommacampagna and the Battle of Custozza in 1848 . In 1849 he took part in the campaign against rebellious Hungary .

In 1857 he resigned, but was assigned to Uhlan Regiment No. 8 the following year . In 1859 he was promoted to major , in 1862 to lieutenant colonel and transferred to Uhlan Regiment No. 13 , which was also called “Trani Uhlans” due to the regiment owner from 1861 to 1866, Count Ludwig Trani, Prince of the Two Sicilies . In 1866 he was promoted to colonel and was regimental commander of the Trani Uhlans.

Became famous by Rodakowski in the Battle of Custozza on June 24, 1866 in that it at the head of his regiment in Villafranca di Verona several bold attacks against enemy infantry - squares and cavalry rode, with his regiment, however, suffered heavy losses. In 1908, the genre painter Ludwig Koch presented a 347 × 244 cm picture of Rodakowski in this battle from the front with a determined expression, galloping out and with the cavalry saber raised and raised, riding towards the viewer. The monumental painting contributed significantly to Rodakowski's fame and is now in the Vienna Army History Museum .

In 1871 Rodakowski became the commandant of a cavalry brigade, in 1873 he was promoted to major general and in 1876 retired as a titularized field marshal lieutenant . He is buried in the St. Leonhard Cemetery in Graz .
