Due to its location on Via Postumia , the place was in the Roman Empire , 15 BC. Founded as a Roman camp, well developed. On March 9, 1185 Villafranca was founded as a colony by the city of Verona and was granted tax exemption, which is reflected in the name Villafranca (free city) . The colony was settled with 180 free farming families and also served defensive military purposes, namely to defend against Mantua . A large square city wall with towers and moats was built for this. The city developed through the silk trade and silk industry.

On July 11, 1859, the preliminary peace of Villafranca was concluded here, which ended the Sardinian War . On September 17, 1943, members of the Reich Grenadier Division “Hoch- und Deutschmeister” of the Wehrmacht shot 10 Italian soldiers in the city because they had allegedly shot at a German column.
