Garda is a northern Italian municipality with 4111 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Verona on the western edge of the Veneto region . Garda is located on the east bank and is the namesake of Lake Garda . In and around the place there is a lush, almost Mediterranean vegetation. Therefore it is a popular tourist destination on the lake. Garda is characterized by the lake promenade and the small port with the "Palazzo dei Capitani" from the Venetian era.

The Punta San Vigilio promontory juts out into the lake near Garda . For the philosopher Agostino di Brenzone it was the “most beautiful place in the world”. Today this place is privately owned, the use of the beach "Baia delle Sirene" is chargeable.

history

The remains of pile dwellings are evidence of a very early settlement. It is documented that Theodoric , King of the Goths, had a castle built here in the 5th century - the Rocca di Garda - on a rocky plateau high above the town. It was long considered impregnable - even Emperor Barbarossa did not succeed in taking it. In medieval literature this castle was called "Ze Garten", or "the garden". Five centuries later, the Lombard prince Berengar II ruled here until he was defeated by King Otto the Great and imprisoned in Bamberg for life . The castle was destroyed by the Venetians in the 16th century.

From 1904 until the final closure in 1956, the place had a station on the Verona – Caprino / Garda railway .

Origin of name

The name "Garda" probably originated during the migration period and the settlement of the Longobards. It is related to the Germanic-German "garden" (protected area marked out with crops). Originally it meant a base on the strategically favorable rock, later the medieval castle that was created from it. This fortress ultimately gave the whole lake its name. Before, at the time of the Roman Empire, the lake was called "Lacus Benacus". The village of Garda was originally called "Garda plana".

Attractions

  • Due to its long history, Garda has an unmistakable character, which is mainly presented in its small but attractive old town and the beautiful waterfront, the southern extension of which extends to Bardolino, but on the outskirts it resembles many other tourist settlements on the shore of Lake Garda. In this respect, the old town with the lake promenade is a sight in itself.
  • Churches and ecclesiastical institutions
    • Parish church of Santa Maria Maggiore from the 10th century . The parish church of Garda is one of the oldest in the area, there was already a religious chapter of canons here in the 10th century , including clergy from Torri del Benaco and Bardolino . In 1522 the church was awarded to the Ospedale Maggiore in Brescia . After the earthquake of 1117, the church was rebuilt and dedicated to Saint Mary. It was modernized and modified in 1824. The bell tower dates from 1571. Traces of the medieval building of the church can be found in the bell tower and in the cloister.
    • Camaldolese hermitage from the 15th century
    • St. Stephen's Church from the 17th century (note: a plaque on the church gives the 15th century, the 17th century information was taken from the Garda website) . The church is located in the middle of the old town with the Torrente Gusa flowing past it, a usually narrow stream. The church existed before 1687, which can be seen from an inscription on the church wall. In 1877 it was rebuilt and renovated.
    • Church of the Assumption from the 18th century
    • San Bernardo Church
