Costermano sul Garda is a northern Italian municipality ( comune ) in the province of Verona in Veneto . The municipality, inhabited by 3,902 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019), is located in the hinterland of Lake Garda about 120 kilometers west of Venice and 25 kilometers northwest of Verona . The German military cemetery of the same name is located on a hill in the Costermano district south of the town center.

German military cemetery

Inaugurated on May 6, 1967, the German war cemetery in Costermano was the result of an agreement between the Federal Republic of Germany and Italy to enable the 21,972 German soldiers who died there in the Second World War to be buried with dignity . This was made possible, among other things, by the support of Manfred Bergmeister, who u. a. forged the cross on the top of the hill, where many services, also in German, are held outdoors. Costermano was chosen primarily because of its easy accessibility for the numerous German tourists. The cemetery was built on the hills of the Guardia, in a hollow between the Caprino plain and the Garda bay. However, the cemetery is also criticized, because here in addition to numerous simple soldiers u. a. the extermination camp commanders Christian Wirth , Franz Reichleitner and Gottfried Schwarz are also buried.
