Gottfried Schwarz (born May 3, 1913 in Fürth ; † June 19, 1944 in San Pietro al Natisone ), nicknamed "Friedl", was SS-Untersturmführer and was involved in " Aktion T4 ". During “ Aktion Reinhardt ”, Schwarz was deputy camp commandant in the Belzec extermination camp and commandant of the Dorohucza labor camp .

Life

Gottfried Schwarz, a member of the SS , was a member of the Leibstandarte SS Adolf Hitler after the National Socialist " seizure of power " and was also employed with the security team in the Dachau concentration camp . Probably from 1939 or 1940, Schwarz was transferred to "Aktion T4" and worked there as a "corpse burner" in the "euthanasia" centers in Grafeneck , Brandenburg and Bernburg . From the end of 1941, Schwarz became deputy commander in the Belzec extermination camp, initially under Christian Wirth and from the beginning of August 1942 under Gottlieb Hering . Schwarz was responsible for the gassing process in the extermination area of the Belzec camp, where more than 430,000 Jews were murdered. After the Belzec camp was closed, Schwarz became camp commandant in the Dorohucza labor camp in March 1943 . Because of his "deeds" by Heinrich Himmler, Schwarz was described as one of the most deserving men of "Aktion Reinhardt" and at the same time promoted to SS-Untersturmführer on June 21, 1943. After the end of "Aktion Reinhardt", at the end of 1943 Schwarz, like most of the personnel of "Aktion Reinhardt", was transferred to the Adriatic Coastal Operation Zone in Trieste . Here he was a member of the " Special Department, Operation R ", which served the "extermination of Jews", the confiscation of Jewish property and the fight against partisans . Schwarz was killed by partisans on June 19, 1944 in San Pietro al Natisone.

After the war ended, Schwarz was buried together with Christian Wirth and Franz Reichleitner , the second commandant of the Sobibor extermination camp , in the German military cemetery Costermano in the province of Verona. After protests, the names of the three SS men who had been killed were deleted from the cemetery “book of honor” in the early 1990s and their ranks removed from the gravestones.
