Sant'Ambrogio di Valpolicella is a northern Italian municipality ( comune ) with 11,987 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Verona in Veneto . The municipality is located about 15 kilometers northwest of Verona and about 8.5 kilometers east of Lake Garda . It belongs to the Comunità montana della Lessinia .
The San Giorgio Group is a member of the I borghi più belli d'Italia association (The Most Beautiful Places in Italy).
history
The place is as a chapel (dedicated to St. George ) in the 11th / 12th. Century was built over a Lombard , possibly also pre-Roman place of worship. The foundations of this church building were visible from the remains of Roman altars.
Economy and Transport
Sant'Ambrogio di Valpolicella is located in an important wine-growing area where the Valpolicella of the same name is produced. The Recioto della Valpolicella is also created here. Strada Statale 12 dell'Abetone e del Brennero runs through the municipality from Verona to Trento . The nearest train station is in the Domegliara district on the Brenner railway from Verona to Innsbruck .
