Hermann Kirchner (officer)

Hermann Kirchner (born May 6, 1890 in Feldbach , Styria , † March 8, 1953 in Graz ) was an Austrian soldier.

Life

Hermann Kirchner attended the infantry cadet school in Liebenau in Graz. He became an ensign in 1909 and a lieutenant in 1912 . During the First World War he distinguished himself in the South Tyrol offensive in May 1916 with the conquest of the Zugna Torta. As a general staff officer he took part in the fighting in Bukovina and Ukraine . In 1918 he was appointed captain .

After the First World War, Kirchner retired and worked as a businessman until 1928. In 1922 he was awarded the Military Maria Theresa Order for conquering Zugna Torta . In 1928 he joined the Army of Albania , where he worked as a major in building up the training system. In 1931 he was appointed the first general staff officer of the Albanian army and was head of personnel until shortly before the outbreak of the Second World War.

The former Kirchner barracks in Graz was named after him.

The retired 2012 class of the Theresian Military Academy chose Hermann Kirchner as their namesake.

The Austrian Post issued a special postage stamp on his first day on September 29, 2012.
