Nokuthula Ngwenyama
Nokuthula Ngwenyama (born June 16, 1976 ) is an American violinist and violist .
Ngwenyama, whose parents are from Zimbabwe and Japan, grew up in Southern California. She first had piano and violin lessons before switching to the viola at the age of twelve. She attended the Curtis Institute of Music until 1996 and then studied at the Conservatoire de Paris . At the age of seventeen she won the Primrose Competition and the Young Concert Artists International Auditions . She made her debut in Washington at the Kennedy Center and won an Avery Fisher Career Grant in 1997 . She studied African and Asian religions at Harvard University and received her master's degree in 2002.
Several CDs have been released on EDI Records by Ngwenyamas: CHE !: A Musical Biography and JS Bach Partitas with guitarist Michael Long , Rubinstein Sonatas with pianist Jennifer Lim and Il Principe: Courtly Airs and Dances with Michael Long and violinist David Brewer . She has performed with well-known international orchestras, such as the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra under Esa-Pekka Salonen and the National Philharmonic Orchestra , and as a chamber musician. She was visiting professor at the University of Notre Dame in 2007 and at the Jacobs School of Music from 2008-09 Indiana University . She is also director of the Primrose International Viola Competition .
