The Monte Piana is a 2,324 meter high mountain in the Sexten Dolomites on the border between the Italian provinces of South Tyrol and Belluno , Italy , north of Misurinasees . The plateau mountain still carries the northern summit called Monte Piano ( 2305  m ). The isolated mountain is surrounded by the Drei Zinnen in the east, the Cristallo group , the Cadini group and the Dürrenstein . The South Tyrolean parts of the mountain are protected in the Drei Zinnen nature park .

During the First World War , the mountain was fiercely contested between Austrians and Italians (see also the article Mountain War 1915–1918 ). The northern summit, Monte Piano, was occupied by the Austrians, the southern main summit by the Italians. On the high plateau-like summit area, the fortifications, trenches and tunnels on both sides, some of which were only a few meters opposite, still bear witness to this today. These can be viewed on a historical circular route laid out by the Association of Friends of the Dolomites from 1977 to 1982 .

A slight ascent up the mountain takes place from the south to the Rifugio Angelo Bosi (2,205 m), to the hut as an asphalt road. The other ascent and descent via the tourist path and the pioneer path require surefootedness . The Dolomiten-Höhenweg 3 crosses the mountain.

“Monte Piano” year badge of the Theresian Military Academy in Wiener Neustadt

To commemorate the role of Monte Piano as a theater of war 1915–1917, the year 2000 from the Theresian Military Academy in Wiener Neustadt chose the name “Monte Piano vintage”.
