The Sexten Dolomites (also Sexten Dolomites) form the northeastern mountain group of the Dolomites in Italy . They are located in the far east of South Tyrol and in the north of the province of Belluno and are bordered in the north by the Pustertal , in the northeast and east by the Sextental , in the south by the Val d'Ansiei and in the west by the Höhlensteintal . In the South Tyrolean part of the mountains lies the Drei Zinnen nature park , which has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since June 26, 2009 .
Geology and biology
The mountain range belonging to the Southern Limestone Alps consists largely of dolomite rocks that formed from coral reefs in the sinking Tethys of the Mesozoic (lower Triassic ). There are several types, including the Schlern dolomite and the overlying main dolomite . Characteristic of the Sesto and adjacent Dolomite the contrast between undulating's pastures and the upstanding from them Riffgipfeln with partially over 3000 m, the most powerful of dumps are surrounded (see figure) .
There are noticeable populations of some rare grouse species in the nature park. Since 1999, hunters, foresters and the office of nature parks have been investigating the distribution areas of the ptarmigan , stone grouse , black grouse and capercaillie . It is worth mentioning the larger populations of woodpeckers as well as deer and badger .
A number of protected plants should also be mentioned, including various bluebells and crocuses , the Dolomite columbine , alpine orchid species, the edelweiss , the alpine carnation ( Armeria alpina ) (Sciliar witch) and the Dolomite yarrow . Many alpine meadows are known for their blooming flowers in spring .
history
During the First World War , the Sesto Dolomites were the scene of fighting, when the war between Italian and Austrian troops raged here in the mountains for two and a half years (see also the article Mountain War 1915–1918 ). Mute witnesses such as holes in the rock, fortifications (see picture) and rusting shrapnel are still visible today. Parts of the former Military climb became the Friedensweg designed the westwards to other parts of the Dolomites and eastward as Karnischer trail is called (border with Austria). Today the famous Alpinisteig (Strada degli alpini) leads through the vertical rock walls of the Elfer as a via ferrata on former supply paths to the Sentinellascharte. The Alpinisteig, also formerly known as the Alpiniweg, was laid by Austrian and Italian high mountain troops during the First World War. The Alpinisteig was later expanded into a via ferrata by the Padua section of the CAI . Today the Alpinisteig is one of the most popular high-altitude trails in the Sesto Dolomites.
