The Paternkofel (emphasis on the second syllable, i.e. Patèrn ; Italian Paterno or Monte Paterno ) is a 2744  m high mountain in the Sesto Dolomites on the border between South Tyrol and the province of Belluno in Italy . The South Tyrolean shares are placed under protection in the Drei Zinnen nature park .

The first ascent took place on September 11, 1882 by Franz Innerkofler and Erich Künigl from the Gamsscharte (2650 m). The north-northwest ridge of the Paternkofel was first climbed in 1886 by the guides S. and C. Innerkofler with E. Biendl.

During the First World War it was fiercely contested between Austrians and Italians, which is still demonstrated today by the positions and climbing systems (see also the article Mountain War 1915–1918 ). On July 4, 1915, the famous Sesto Dolomite climber and mountain guide Sepp Innerkofler was killed in the immediate vicinity of the summit while trying to conquer the mountain from the Italian Alpini .

Paternkofel and Three Peaks in the morning light

The Paternkofel is in the immediate vicinity of the famous Drei Zinnen , separated by the Paternsattel. The Paternkofel can be circled on a rewarding and popular tour from the Rifugio Lavaredo ( 2344  m ) over the Paternsattel ( 2454  m ) to the Dreizinnenhütte ( 2405  m ) and back over the Büllelejoch ( 2528  m ). For sure-footed and vertigo-free mountaineers with a little climbing ability, there is the possibility of reaching the Paternkofel through a tunnel, over a suspension bridge or over iron ladders on the old climbing systems from the First World War, which were restored in 1974/75. The easier but not easy climbs unite on the Gamsjoch, from where the Innerkofler-De-Luca via ferrata, named in honor of Sepp Innerkofler and his opponent Piero de Luca , leads through partly vertical walls to the summit.

Some scenes from the British fantasy film Krull were filmed on Paternkofel in 1982 .
