history

First ascent

The first ascent took place on July 20, 1878 by (the mountain guide) Michel Innerkofler and Roland von Eötvös (Loránd Eötvös).

Mountain War 1915–1918

In the mountain war of 1915–1918 , the area of the Rotwand was fiercely fought over and costly; The remains of war caverns and scrap can still be found in the summit area. The Rotwand gained its importance for the Austrians, especially as a flank protection against a break in by the Italians over the Kreuzbergpass . As early as July 1915, soldiers of the Bavarian Leibregiment set up an artillery position on the Rotwandscharte. The Standschützen of the Academic Legion held the summit to the end, even after the Italians had conquered the Andertalpenscharte and Sentinella-Scharte on April 16, 1916. In the Austrian defensive struggle, the brothers Christl (born July 9, 1917) and Vinzenz Vinatzer (died September 1, 1917) stood out. On October 19, 1917, the Austrians took action as a distraction from the preparations for the 12th Isonzo battle .

Location and surroundings

The mountain range is in an exposed position between Fischleintal and Sextental in the Drei Zinnen nature park . Essential peaks visible from the valley are the Wurzbach (2675 m) and the Prater (2745 m). The summit cross of the Sesto Rotwand is at an altitude of 2936 m. The main summit and highest point is the Vinatzerturm (2965 m). Upstream rock formations are the Rotwandköpfe (up to 2345 m) and the Burgstall (2168 m).

Routes to the summit

One route starts from the Rotwandwiesen, which can be easily reached from Sexten / Moos using the gondola lift. First you use the Gamssteig to the northern and lowest foothills of the Rotwandköpfe. This is where the ascent, classified as a via ferrata , over the ridge of the Rotwandköpfe starts. Appropriate climbing equipment is strongly recommended. A steep rock step leads to the cirque of the Wurzbach summit (2675 m), which is bypassed over scree, further small rock steps and even in summer still existing snow fields on the east side to a saddle, from which a descent to the Anderteralm or transition to the Elferscharte is possible . From here there is also the opportunity to climb to the Wurzbach summit. To the Sesto Rotwand you turn east to the Anderter Scharte (2698 m) between Prater (2745 m) and the Sesto Rotwand. The ascent to the summit cross then takes place steeply over very loose scree. The descent can be done on the same path, alternatively a descent via the Anderteralm or a steep gully below the Wurzbach summit towards Burgstall is possible. Allow 4 hours for the ascent and 2.5 hours for the descent. A second southern route can start from the Bertihütte . The ascent first goes through the Popera valley in the direction of the Sentinellascharte, with the path to the summit branching off shortly before as a very steep via ferrata towards the north over the Zandonellascharte. The descent is the same way.

  3. Occasionally one reads Rolanda instead of Roland . If this is not a typo, it is confused with his daughter Rolanda von Eötvös , who (later) was also a well-known mountaineer in the Dolomites. (See information on Loránd Eötvös )
