Mercedes Aráoz (born August 5, 1961 in Lima as Mercedes Rosalba Aráoz Fernández ) is a Peruvian politician, professor and economist . She was Prime Minister of Peru from 2017 to 2018 .

Life

Born and raised in Lima, they first attended St. Mary's School in Magdalena del Mar . She then studied at the Pacific University in Lima. She received her Masters and PhD in Economics from the University of Miami . She later became a professor at Pacific University and the affiliated research center.

She also worked for the World Bank , UNCTAD , OAS and the CAF , before she was Minister for Foreign Trade and Tourism in the government of Alan García from 2006 to 2009, briefly Minister for Production in 2009 and later Minister for Economic Affairs and Finance. In the 2011 presidential election , she was supposed to run as a representative of the Alianza Popular Revolucionaria Americana to succeed her party colleague García, but withdrew her candidacy at the beginning of the year due to disputes, so that ultimately no one ran for the ruling party. From 2012 to 2015 she was the representative of the Inter-American Development Bank in Mexico .

She ran for political office for the first time in the 2016 elections. At number 1 on the list of Peruanos Por el Kambio (PPK) in the Lima Metrapolitana constituency, she was elected to the Congress of Peru ; In addition, she ran successfully at the same time as Second Vice President of Peru alongside Pedro Pablo Kuczynski and was introduced to her office on July 28 of that year. From September 17, 2017 until shortly after Martín Vizcarra took over the presidency in March 2018, she was Kuczynski's second Prime Minister; she resigned on April 2 in favor of Vizcarra's election César Villanueva .

At the end of September 2019, a dispute between Vizcarra and Congress over the appointment of judges at the Peruvian Constitutional Court escalated . Vizcarra then dissolved the Congress and announced new elections. In response, Congress decided to suspend Vizcarra and appointed Vice President Aráoz as interim president. However, one day later, she announced her resignation and instead spoke in favor of early elections, which took place on January 26, 2020 . The next parliamentary and presidential elections were originally planned for April 2021.
