Martín Vizcarra (2018)

Martín Alberto Vizcarra Cornejo (born March 22, 1963 in Lima ) is a Peruvian engineer and politician . He became President of Peru on March 23, 2018 . Vizcarra is non-party, but is close to the liberal-conservative collecting movement Peruanos Por el Kambio .

Life

Martín Vizcarra was elected regional president of the Moquegua region in 2010 as a candidate of the regional party Gobierno Regional por Ti . He was Vice President of Peru under President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski from July 28, 2016 to March 22, 2018 . After his appointment he was also Peruvian Ambassador to Canada for a time . After Kuczynski resigned on allegations of corruption, Vizcarra was sworn in as President on March 23, 2018.

At the end of September 2019, a dispute between Vizcarra and Congress over the appointment of judges at the Peruvian Constitutional Court escalated . The opposition-controlled Congress wanted to select two new constitutional judges without the usual public bid process. On September 30, 2019, Vizcarra then dissolved the Congress and announced new elections. In return, with a vote of 86 of the 130 MPs, Congress declared the President “incapacitated” and “temporarily suspended” (for one year). Congress appointed Vice President Mercedes Aráoz as interim president. However, she resigned from her offices only one day later and, like Vizcarra, spoke out in favor of early elections. The elections originally scheduled for April 2021 took place on January 26, 2020 and ended without a clear winner. Vizcarra, who remains president, cannot count on a majority in parliament for the remainder of his term in office.
