Nicolás Lindley (1908-1995)

Nicolás Lindley López (born November 16, 1908 in Lima ; † February 3, 1995 there ), military and politician, was head of a military junta of Peru for a few months in 1963 .

Life

Lindley completed his studies at the "Anglo-Peruvian College". From 1926 Lindley attended the military school in Chorillos near Lima and received his doctorate there in 1930. He made a career in the military and in August 1960 became General Commander of the Peruvian Army .

Junta and Presidency

Together with Ricardo Pérez Godoy , Nicolás Lindley carried out a coup d'état against President Manuel Prado y Ugarteche in July 1962 . The coup plotters set up a military junta to organize new elections and hand over power to a new civilian government. Initially, Pérez led the junta and Lindley was Secretary of Defense. When Pérez showed efforts to stay in power longer than originally planned, Lindley disempowered him in March 1963 and became the new head of state himself. After conducting the new elections, Lindley handed over to his popularly elected successor Fernando Belaúnde Terry on July 28, 1963 as planned .

From 1964 to 1975, Lindley was Peruvian ambassador to Spain .
