Francisco Morales Bermúdez Cerruti (born October 4, 1921 in Lima , Peru ) is a Peruvian general and politician and was the dictator of the country from 1975 to 1980 .

Life

Francisco Morales Bermúdez was born in Lima in 1921 as the son of Colonel Remigio Morales Bermúdez. He is the grandson of Remigio Morales Bermúdez , the Peruvian President from 1890 to 1894. In 1939 he went to the military school of Chorrillos for training. After graduating, he was assigned to the Center for Higher Military Studies (Centro de Altos Estudios Militares - CAEM), which is equivalent to a general staff school .

He was promoted to the rank of brigadier general and became Treasury Secretary in 1963 under the democratically elected President Fernando Belaúnde Terry . He had to give up this office after two months due to internal quarrels with the government.

After Belaúnde was overthrown by a coup , the military government of General Velasco Morales Bermúdez again offered the post of finance minister. In 1974 he became Prime Minister and Minister of Defense at the same time . From February 1975 he was also commander in chief of the Peruvian armed forces . On August 29 of the same year, Morales Bermúdez launched a coup against General Velasco. The following day he proclaimed himself president.

Presidency

The political and economic reforms under the government of Morales Bermúdez were largely ineffective. Morales Bermúdez sought the transfer of power to a civilian government. In 1978 elections to a constituent assembly were held. In 1979 it passed a new constitution, which replaced the Peruvian constitution of 1933.

After the democratic elections in 1980, Morales Bermúdez was replaced by Fernando Belaúnde , who took up his second term as president. Francisco Morales Bermúdez occasionally appeared publicly and gave speeches, especially on the situation of the army. In 1985 he ran for the presidential election but received less than 1% of the vote.

Prosecution

On January 17, 2017, he was sentenced to life imprisonment in Rome.
