Grays is the largest town in the Unitary Authority of Thurrock in Essex . It is located east of London on the north bank of the Thames and has around 73,000 inhabitants. The city was the seat of the important baron family of the Grays, who were nicknamed Codnor and who had belonged to the English nobility since 1299.

The main artery in the city is London Road , which connects Grays with the Lakeside Shopping Center and with Purfleet . The city is located on the M25 ring road , which crosses the Thames in a tunnel to the west of the city. Grays is also connected to London by the A13 and a railway line.

Grays is home to Grays Athletics FC football club. The city is also known for the Fat Surfer , which hosts music events every Friday. Sights include the Thameside Theater and the Thurrock History Museum .

On October 23, 2019, the bodies of 31 men and eight women from Vietnam were found in a refrigerated truck registered in Bulgaria in Grays . They are believed to have been trafficked or smuggled into the UK. The driver of the truck was arrested and pleaded guilty to the negligent homicide in a court in London in early April 2020. On May 26, 2020, 26 other suspects, mostly Vietnamese, were arrested in France and Belgium.
