Michael Vincent Paschal Rowland OFM (born March 18, 1929 in Grays , Great Britain , † September 23, 2012 in Dundee , South Africa ) was Roman Catholic Bishop of Dundee .

Life

Michael Rowland, the third of seven children, attended St. Thomas of Canterbury Parochial School in Grays and St. Bonaventure School in Forest Gate . In 1940 he was in the service of the Royal Air Force to enter, but resigned his university degree at the end of World War II, the religious community in the Franciscan. On October 3, 1945 he began his novitiate ; He took his first vows on October 13, 1946. After his training at the Franciscan Study House in East Bergholt, he was ordained a priest on March 21, 1953 . He was initially a chaplain in the parish of Aldridge / Shelfield near Birmingham.

In 1955 he went on a mission to South Africa. Rowland initially worked in Ermelo and Bethal. In 1956 he studied the language isiZulu at a mission station of the Benedictines in Zululand . In 1958 he became a pastor in Dundee in the newly established Apostolic Prefecture Volksrust , later he was active in the mission areas in Ladysmith and Mhlumayo. In 1965 he became Superior of the English Province's Franciscan Mission in South Africa and was committed to bringing together Franciscan missionary activities in South Africa. He set up administrative structures and built a novitiate. In 1977 he became the first president of the Franciscan Federation of Southern Africa and Rhodesia .

Pope John Paul II appointed him the first bishop of Dundee on March 17, 1983 with the elevation of the Apostolic Prefecture to a diocese. He received his episcopal ordination on September 17th of the same year by the Bishop of Kokstad , Wilfrid Fox Napier, OFM; Co- consecrators were Denis Eugene Hurley OMI , Archbishop of Durban , and Mansuet Dela Biyase , Bishop of Eshowe . He built up the administration of the new diocese and was responsible for the construction of 83 churches, 20 kindergartens, a children's home, an old people's home, 15 primary schools, three high schools, seven religious convents, four clinics and two pastoral centers.

On September 30, 2005, Pope Benedict XVI. his resignation request submitted for reasons of age. He then lived in the Maria Ratschitz Mission and was involved in the Duduza Care Center in Wasbank , KwaZulu-Natal , for the care of AIDS patients.
