The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Durban ( Latin Archidioecesis Durbaniana , English Archdiocese of Durban ) is a in South Africa located Archdiocese of the Roman Catholic Church based in Durban .

history

The Archdiocese of Durban was founded on November 15, 1850 by Pope Pius IX. Established from the cession of territory by the Apostolic Vicariate Cape of Good Hope as the Apostolic Vicariate Natal . The Apostolic Vicariate Natal gave several times in its history parts of its territory to establish new Apostolic Prefectures and Apostolic Vicariates.

On January 11, 1951, the Vicariate Apostolic Natal was by Pope Pius XII. raised to the archbishopric and renamed the archdiocese of Durban . The Archdiocese of Durban gave up parts of its territory on June 23, 1958 to establish the Apostolic Prefecture Volksrust .
