The Roman Catholic Diocese of Umtata ( lat. : Dioecesis Umtatana ) is in South Africa situated Roman Catholic diocese based in Mthatha (formerly Umtata ).

history

The diocese of Umtata was founded on March 30, 1930 by Pope Pius XI. Established from the cession of territory by the Apostolic Vicariate Mariannhill as the Apostolic Prefecture of Umtata . On April 13, 1937, the Apostolic Prefecture Umtata was by Pius XI. raised to the apostolic vicariate .

The Apostolic Vicariate Umtata was on January 11, 1951 by Pope Pius XII. raised to the diocese and subordinated to the archdiocese of Durban as a suffragan .
