Ernst Heinrich Karlen CMM (born February 1, 1922 in Törbel , Canton of Valais , Switzerland ; † October 28, 2012 in Bulawayo , Zimbabwe ) was Archbishop of Bulawayo .

Life

Ernst Heinrich Karlen joined the order of the Mariannhill Missionaries in Brig after graduating in 1942 , made his first profession on September 8, 1943 and studied philosophy and theology with the Jesuits in Sion and at the University of Innsbruck . He was ordained a priest on June 22, 1947 . After studying at an Austrian Jesuit college , he completed a doctorate in theology from 1948 to 1950 at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. From 1951 he taught moral theology and canon law at the seminary of St. Peter in KwaZulu-Natal and from 1952 to 1957 at the national seminary near Durban . From 1958 to 1963 he was a missionary in Transkei and in 1959 he became a pastor in Qhumbu. From 1963 to 1968 he was vicar general and administrator of Umtata Cathedral.

Pope Paul VI appointed him Bishop of Umtata on September 26, 1968 . The Apostolic Delegate in South Africa and Apostolic Pro-Nuncio in Lesotho John Gordon donated him episcopal ordination on December 3, 1968 ; Co- consecrators were Joseph Grueter CMM, Former Bishop of Umtata, and Alfonso Liguori Morapeli OMI , Archbishop of Maseru and Apostolic Administrator of Leribe .

On May 9, 1974 he was appointed by Pope Paul VI. appointed Bishop of Bulawayo in what was then Rhodesia. For many years Karlen was chairman of the liturgical commission of the Bishops' Conference, which translated the liturgy into the language of the Xhosa and isiNdebele . From 1975 to 1977 he was President of the Bishops 'Conference of Zimbabwe (Zimbabwe Catholic Bishops' Conference ZCBC). Karlen repeatedly mediated the ethnic conflicts between the local population and the settlers. In 1983 he had a five-hour meeting with President Robert Mugabe and called him to a peace process with his opponent Joshua Nkomo . With the elevation of the Diocese of Bulawayo to an archbishopric, he was appointed archbishop on June 10, 1994. On October 24, 1997, Pope John Paul II accepted his age-related resignation.

Karlen died on October 28, 2012 as a result of an operation in the Mater Dei hospital in Bulawayo.
