Joseph Grueter
Joseph Grueter CMM (born December 4, 1896 in Ruswil , Switzerland; † March 2, 1976 ) was a Swiss missionary and Roman Catholic bishop of Umtata in South Africa.
Life
On June 29, 1927 Grueter was ordained a priest for the Mariannhiller missionaries . On April 3, 1941 he was appointed Vicar Apostolic and at the same time Titular Bishop of Badiae . He received the episcopal ordination on May 22, 1941 by the Apostolic Delegate in South Africa Archbishop Bernhard Adriaan Gijlswijk OP . Co- consecrators were the Vicar Apostolic of Natal Henri Delalle OMI . On January 11, 1951, Grueter was appointed the first diocesan bishop of Umtata when the Apostolic Vicariate was elevated to the status of a diocese . He held this office until September 26, 1968. At that time he was appointed titular bishop of Ammoniace . He retired on March 3, 1971.
