Ignacio Prieto Vega IEME (born March 9, 1923 in Besande , Province of León , Spain , † May 9, 2008 in Madrid ) was Bishop of Hwange in Zimbabwe .

Life

Ignacio Prieto Vega, after attending school in Morgovejo (León), the seminaries of San Froilán in León and San Jerónimo in Burgos, joined the religious community of the Instituto Español de San Francisco Javier ( Society of Apostolic Life ) in 1947 and received the sacrament on August 10, 1947 the ordination . After postgraduate studies at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome and the Witwatersrand University in Johannesburg, he worked in his home diocese of León. In 1949 he went to southern Rhodesia as a missionary for the first time , namely to Hwange (Wankie). From 1958 to 1963 he was rector of the national mission seminar of the IEME in Burgos.

In 1963 he was by John XXIII. appointed Bishop of the Diocese of Hwange in the province of North Matabeleland in Zimbabwe. The Archbishop of Burgos Luciano Pérez Platero donated his episcopal ordination ; Co-consecrators were the Bishop of León Luis Almarcha Hernández and Bishop José Lecuona Labandibar , Superior General of the Instituto Español de San Francisco Javier.

For many years he was chairman of the Bishops' Conference of Zimbabwe and other initiatives and organizations. He was a member of the Second Vatican Council from 1962 to 1965 . Ignacio Prieto Vega has repeatedly campaigned against violence in Rhodesia, later Zimbabwe.

In 1999 his resignation was granted by John Paul II . As emeritus he was rector of the Instituto Religioso Femenino in Hwange.
