Solanum amotapense is a species of the genus nightshade ( Solanum ) inthe nightshade family (Solanaceae).

description

Solanum amotapense is a 0.5 to 2 m high shrub . The branches are densely hairy with unbranched, non-glandular trichomes , often with short-stalked, glandular trichomes in between. The sympodial units usually have seven or more leaves . The leaf blades are membranous, 4 to 23 cm long and 2 to 14 cm wide, the ratio between length and width is between 1.5: 1 and 2.5: 1. The leaves are undivided, their shape is ovate to elliptical, they are pointed at the tip and wedge-shaped to almost heart-shaped at the base. The top is almost hairless to densely hairy with trichomes similar to those of the branches. The underside and the veins are moderately to densely hairy. The leaf stalks are densely hairy and 1 to 8 cm long.

The inflorescences are unbranched or simply forked. They consist of six to 30 flowers and are 2.5 to 14 cm long in total. The inflorescence stalk is 1 to 6.5 cm long, the inflorescence axis is 1.5 to 9 cm long, the flower stalks 5 to 15 cm. The flower stalks extend on the fruit to 10 to 15 mm and are 1 to 25 mm apart. They are thickened at the base.

The calyx is slightly hairy with unbranched, non-glandular and stalked glandular trichomes . At the top it is tapered, so that there is an inflated calyx tube with a diameter of 2.5 to 5 mm. The calyx lobes are 1 to 3 mm long and 1 to 1.5 mm wide, triangular to triangular-awl-shaped and pointed towards the front. The crown is white or purple in color, it can be membranous to membrane-like. It is circular-star-shaped and measures 10 to 25 mm in diameter. The corolla tube is 5 to 7 mm long. The corolla lobes measure 6 to 13 mm in length, their width is 4 to 12 mm, they are triangular-egg-shaped and pointed towards the front. They are sparsely to moderately hairy on the outside, especially near the tips. The inside is hairless.

The anthers can be inclined, they are yellow or greenish yellow, egg-shaped and 4 to 6 mm long and 2 to 2.5 mm wide. The outside is smooth to rough, but not obviously papillary . The pores are directed outwards. The ovary and the stylus are hairless. The stylus is cylindrical, 6 to 10 mm long and 0.5 mm in diameter and has a cut scar .

The fruits are 1.5 to 2 cm long and 1.5 to 2 cm in diameter. They are spherical, blunt at the tip, hairless, and pale orange, red, or brownish when ripe. They do not contain accumulations of stone cells . The seeds are 4 to 5 mm long and 4 mm wide, angled and smooth to wrinkled.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 24.

Occurrence and locations

The species occurs in the southwest of Ecuador and in the northwest of Peru . It grows on cliffs, dry and stony river banks and under deciduous vegetation, mainly in seasonally dry areas. The locations are at altitudes between 600 and 2300 m.
