Branch of the Gibraltar Chronicle

The newspaper Gibraltar Chronicle is since 1801 in Gibraltar edited and published since 1821 as daily newspaper . It is Gibraltar's oldest daily newspaper and the second oldest continuously published English-language newspaper in the world.

history

The creation of the Gibraltar Chronicle is closely related to the garrison . Initially, lists of the dead were posted on a bulletin board in the garrison library. On May 4, 1801, a bulletin was printed with the headline "Continuation of the INTELLIGENCE FROM EGYPT received by His Majesty's ship Flora in three weeks from Alexandria". The report had four pages, three of them in English and French. On the fourth page there was an article about Nelson's victory in the sea battle of Copenhagen and a list of the officers who had fallen since landing in Egypt . The second edition appeared on May 8, 1801. The first editor was a French named Charles Bouisson , who had settled in Gibraltar in 1794.

Edition of the Gibraltar Chronicle dated February 2, 1826

The last edition of the Gibraltar Chronicle , which was still numbered with Roman numerals, was numbered CLX (160) on September 22, 1804. Publication was then suspended for five months because of the yellow fever epidemic, until number 161 appeared on March 23, 1805, after which an edition with Arabic numerals was published weekly .

The first 160 issues contained verbatim excerpts from The London Gazette and (in the original or in translation) from official Spanish, French and Russian pronouncements, as well as court orders, parliamentary debates and proclamations, military and naval dispatches, local regulations, exchange rates and reports foreign newspapers. They contained few letters, advertisements, or details of social occasions other than those related to the royal court and the activities of the garrison members. Hence, these days the Gibraltar Chronicle had little or no local content. The newspaper was sold at 1½ reals and the readership was mostly civil servants.

The Gibraltar Chronicle retained its military character well into the twentieth century. It is currently being issued by an independent local trust .

Report on the Battle of Trafalgar

The Gibraltar Chronicle published the report of the victory at Trafalgar on October 21, 1805 two weeks before the London newspapers: As early as October 22, 1805, the British fleet had hit a fishing boat that brought the news to Gibraltar, which was there on October 23 Published in English and French in the Gibraltar Chronicle in 1805 . The publication reproduced a letter from Admiral Collingwood to the Governor of Gibraltar Henry Edward Fox describing the battle. It was not until October 26, 1805, five days after the battle, that Admiral Collingwood was able to deliver the message of victory to Lieutenant Lapenotiere, the commander of a small schooner on its way to England. Prime Minister William Pitt and King George III therefore received the news in the morning hours of November 6, 1805, which delayed publication in The Times to November 7, 1805.

archive

Only two complete or near-complete holdings of the Gibraltar Chronicle are archived and both are in Gibraltar. The garrison library holds a complete series from 1801, including the edition with the "exclusive report" of the victory at Trafalgar. An almost complete collection, only missing the first few years, is in the Gibraltar Archives .
