Bek Air flight 2100 was a scheduled domestic flight of the Kazakh low-cost airline Bek Air from Almaty to Nur-Sultan , on which a Fokker 100 crashed at Almaty airport on December 27, 2019 .

the accident

The plane took off at 7:21 PM local time at the airport of Almaty . Immediately after take-off from runway 05R, it lost height again and, after rolling movements, landed again in an overrun condition, slid over the airport grounds and first hit a concrete wall and then into an empty two-story building ( ). The building is a construction site. Nothing is known about victims on the ground. According to a report by Aerotelegraph, the plane did not climb above 15 to 30 meters. According to a report by the Aviation Herald, two tail strikes occurred during the rotation . Before take-off, only the tailplane was de-iced , but not the wings.

The Deputy Prime Minister of Kazakhstan Roman Skljar initially stated immediately after the accident that the investigators examined a pilot error or technical failure as the cause of the accident. He denied the lack of de-icing as the cause of the accident. At the time of the start the temperatures were around minus 12 degrees Celsius. Passengers who exited the aircraft through the middle emergency exit and the wing reported an icy, slippery top surface.

plane

The aircraft involved was a Fokker 100 ( aircraft registration UP-F1007 ). It completed its first flight in April 1996. In the period that followed, the machine changed hands several times; between 2009 and 2013 it was operated by the German regional airlines Contact Air and OLT Express . The accident involved the third most fatality in a Fokker 100 aircraft.

Since the accident on Palair Macedonian Airways Flight 301 , the manual of the Fokker 100 stipulates that the crew must manually check at least three points on the wing to see whether it is free of ice or other contamination, since the wing profile of the Aircraft reacts critically to such a change. Another ice-related accident involving a Fokker 100 occurred on Air France flight 7775 . According to a statement by the responsible Kazakh authorities on January 20, 2020, the flight captain failed to check the wings before take-off.

Passengers

According to the authorities, there were 98 people on board. There were also two Ukrainians, one from China and one from Kyrgyzstan. There are also eight children among the passengers. The previously published death toll of 15 was corrected to 12 on Friday morning. The number of injuries has also been revised. On December 28, 2019, 47 of the 67 injured were still in the hospital. 8 of them were seriously injured, said the Ministry of Health.

Miscellaneous

  • A day of remembrance for the victims of the accident was held on December 28, 2019.
  • More than 1,000 helpers were deployed to rescue the victims.
  • The government called for blood donations after the accident.
  • After the accident, Bek Air's operating license was withdrawn until further notice.
  • According to a report by the Aviation Herald, the co-pilot of the flight, who initially survived the accident and was able to testify about the accident, also died on January 28, 2020. The number of fatalities increased to thirteen. The flight captain had already died in the accident. The first test results indicate icing as the cause of the accident.
  • In January 2020, the Accident Investigation Commission announced that the evaluation of video recordings at Almaty Airport had shown that the crews of Bek Air had generally not carried out the prescribed inspection of the wings before take-off.
