The airport Almaty ( Kazakh Халықаралық Алматы Әуежайы , Russian Международный Аэропорт Алматы ) ( IATA : ALA , ICAO : UAAA ) with 5.6 million passengers (2017) is the largest airport of the Asian country Kazakhstan and is located about 18 kilometers from the former capital Almaty away. Both national and international air traffic takes place here.

Airport facilities and airlines

The airport has two runways and one terminal. Almaty is one of two aviation hubs for the national airline Air Astana , formerly also for the predecessor Air Kazakhstan . It is also the home airport of Fly Arystan and Qazaq Air .

Lufthansa , Aeroflot and Turkish Airlines all fly to Almaty Airport from Europe .

Incidents

  • On January 29, 2013, all 16 passengers and the five crew members of a Bombardier CRJ200 were killed on SCAT flight 760 after the pilots had to abort the approach to runway 23R due to a lack of ground visibility and the aircraft descended for an unexplained reason when it took off passed over.
  • On December 27, 2019, twelve of the 95 passengers and five crew members of a Fokker 100 on Bek-Air flight 2100 were killed after the machine collapsed again shortly after take-off and broke through a concrete wall behind the runway before it hit one Building collided.
