On January 29, 2013, a Bombardier CRJ-200ER had an accident on SCAT flight 760 ( flight number : DV760) during the approach to Almaty Airport during a go - around maneuver . All 21 occupants were killed in the accident. The cause of the accident remained unclear.
Flight history
The SCAT Airlines CRJ-200ER took off at 11:19 a.m. local time in Kokshetau for its domestic scheduled flight to Almaty . During the flight, the pilots were informed by air traffic control in Almaty at 12:00 noon that visibility at the destination airport was poor due to fog.
At 12:40 p.m. the crew received an instruction to descend to 2,430 meters (8,000 feet ) and maintain this altitude. Although the visibility on the ground was only 175 meters at this point and was therefore below the minimum permitted for a landing, the master wanted to attempt an approach. However, air traffic control did not give clearance, which upset the captain. At 12:57 p.m., the crew received permission to descend to 490 meters (1,600 feet). Because the ground visibility had meanwhile increased to around 275 meters, the clearance for an approach to runway 23R was given shortly thereafter . However, the vertical visibility on the final approach was still only 40 meters.
When the aircraft reached the minimum descent altitude of 185 meters (600 feet ) at around 1:13 p.m. , the pilots were unable to establish visual contact with the runway. The captain decided to go-around . He switched off the autopilot , increased the power of the engines to the maximum ( TO / GA ) and ordered the flaps to be retracted to a position of eight degrees. The CRJ-200ER then began to climb. At the same time, the co-pilot informed air traffic control about the go-around maneuver. While the co-pilot was still talking to the air traffic controller , the aircraft tilted over its nose and began to descend. The Ground Proximity Warning System (GPWS) immediately triggered a proximity alarm without the crew responding immediately. 15 seconds after the autopilot was switched off, the machine hit a field around 1.6 kilometers from the runway. The debris was spread over a length of 192 meters.
Cause of accident
The examination of the wreckage did not reveal any damage and / or failure of a flight-relevant system before the impact. The investigators also ruled out a stall due to icing. The exact procedures on board remained unclear, as did the cause of the accident.
The body of the 56-year-old captain was bent over the control horn , with the shoulder strap only loosely. The investigators assumed that the captain had loosened his seat belt himself at an unspecified point in time. An injury to his right hand indicated that it was likely not on the control horn on impact. Chronic coronary artery disease was also found during the autopsy of the captain . The copilot's body was found with both hands on the control horn.
According to The Aviation Herald , it seems possible that the captain may have had a heart attack while initiating the go-around, loosening his seatbelt and then collapsing over the control horn, pushing it forward and causing the machine to descend. The co-pilot involved in radio communications may not have become aware of the situation until after the GPWS triggered the alarm.
