- Koblenz / Germany : About 45,000 residents are temporarily evacuated due to the demolition or defusing of a 1.8 ton British air mine , a US aircraft bomb and a smoke acid tank from the Second World War , which is the largest evacuation in the history of the Federal Republic.
- Ljubljana / Slovenia : In the parliamentary elections , the list Zoran Janković - Positive Slovenia received 28.5% of the votes cast, followed by the Democratic Party with 26.2%.
- Moscow / Russia : In the parliamentary elections , the ruling party United Russia won by President Dmitri Medvedev with 49.5% of the votes cast, the Communist Party won 19.15%, the Just Russia party 13.17% and the Liberal Democratic Party 11, 66%. After the election results were announced, protests against the government broke out in several cities .
- Zagreb / Croatia : The previous opposition Kukuriku coalition won the parliamentary elections with 40.0% of the votes cast, while the ruling party Democratic Union won 23.5%.

- Paris / France : The OECD publishes a study on the development of income, according to which income inequality in Germany has risen considerably more than in most other industrialized nations over the past two decades.
- Stockholm / Sweden : The Right Livelihood Award , also known as the “Alternative Nobel Prize”, is presented to the US midwife Ina May Gaskin , the Chadian human rights activist Jacqueline Moudeina and the Spanish farm aid organization GRAIN .
- Washington, DC / United States : NASA announces the discovery of the most Earth-like extrasolar planet yet, Kepler-22b , with the help of the Kepler space telescope .

- Chicago / United States : The former governor of Illinois , Rod Blagojevich , is sentenced in prison for corruption to 14 years.
- Paris / France : The organization Reporters Without Borders presents this year's awards for human rights and press freedom to the Syrian cartoonist Ali Ferzat and the weekly newspaper Weekly Eleven News from Myanmar .
- Vienna / Austria : with 112 to 39 votes of the changes National Council came into effect from 1 January 2012 the text of the national anthem of home are of great sons in the home of great sons and daughters changed.

- Brussels / Belgium : At the summit of the heads of state and government of the European Union , Croatia signs the accession treaty to the European Union , while Serbia has been denied candidate status for the time being. Accession talks are to commence with Montenegro in June 2012 . The main theme of the summit was the establishment of a European fiscal union , to which the 17 euro countries and probably the other EU states with the exception of the United Kingdom want to unite .
- Calcutta / India : At least 89 people are killed in a fire in a hospital.

- Lima / Peru : Prime Minister Salomón Lerner submits his resignation to President Ollanta Humala , who then appoints the previous Interior Minister Oscar Valdés as head of government.
- Oslo / Norway and Stockholm / Sweden : This year's Nobel Prize winners receive their awards.
- Sanaa / Yemen : Around two weeks after the resignation of President Ali Abdullah Salih , a government of national unity under opposition leader Mohammed Basindawa is sworn in, which will initially rule the country until February 2012.

- Bern / Switzerland : The figure skater Sarah Meier , the ski racer Didier Cuche and the wheelchair athlete Marcel Hug are named Sportsman of the Year .
- Durban / South Africa : At the 17th UN Climate Change Conference , it is achieved for the first time that climate targets also apply to the United States and emerging countries such as China and India . So far, these three largest carbon dioxide producers had not participated in protecting the global climate.

- Paris / France : The Venezuelan terrorist Ilich Ramírez Sánchez is sentenced to life imprisonment for four attacks in the 1980s.
- Washington, DC / United States : US President Barack Obama officially declares the end of the 2003 occupation of Iraq by the United States. The last 4,000 soldiers are expected to leave the Asian country by the end of the year.

- Shangaosen / Kazakhstan : After protests against the celebrations of the government under Nursultan Nazarbayev on the country's independence day from the Soviet Union with at least eleven deaths, the government imposed a state of emergency until January 5, 2012.

- Trollhättan / Sweden : The automobile manufacturer Saab files for bankruptcy .
- Vaduz / Liechtenstein : The Principality joins the Schengen Agreement as the 26th member state , which means that identity checks at the borders with Austria and Switzerland are no longer required. The customs controls remain in place, however, as there is no agreement on a customs union with the European Union .
