Marcel Eric Hug (born January 16, 1986 ) is a Swiss wheelchair athlete . He is active in the starting class T54 over the medium and long distance .

Career

Hug was born in 1986 in Pfyn with spina bifida . At the age of ten, he first started a racing wheelchair in a junior race, the Schenkon Marathon school race, and in 1998 he won the same race in his age group. In the following years he was also able to record numerous successes. From 2001 to 2004 he was a member of the athletics squad of the RSS, since 2005 of the Swiss national squad.

Hug, who attended the Thurgau sports school (now: the Thurgau National Elite Sports School), then completed his commercial training at Frei's schools in Lucerne.

2004 Summer Paralympics

At the 2004 Summer Paralympics in Athens he won bronze medals in the 800 and 1500 meters.

2008 Summer Paralympics

In 2008 he took part in the Summer Paralympics in Beijing in part.
Hug started his professional career in January 2010. At the end of June 2010 he set four new world records over 800, 1500, 5000 and 10,000 meters at the Swiss Championships in Arbon. Since the beginning of his career, Hug has been training with Paul Odermatt (certified trainer for top sport Swiss Olympic). His nickname is "Silver Bullet".

2012 Summer Paralympics

At the Summer Paralympics 2012 in London , he won silver medals in the 800 meters and in the marathon. His principle is:

"I want to be respected as an athlete and as a person and not admired as a disabled person ... I do not see myself as an ambassador for disabled people."

Summer Paralympics 2016

At the 2016 Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro , he won over 800 meters and gold in the marathon. He also won silver over 1500 and 5000 meters in Rio.
In 2016 Hug won the city marathons in Boston, London, Berlin, Chicago and New York (for the second time after 2013), thus winning the Marathon Major Series.

Marcel Hug was nominated by the Laureus Foundation in 2017 for the Disabled Sportsman of the Year (World Sportsperson of the Year with a Disability) and on February 27, 2018 he was awarded this award in Monte Carlo .
