The Berlin Marathon 2018 (officially: BMW Berlin Marathon 2018 ) was the 45th edition of the annual running event in Berlin , Germany . The marathon took place on September 16, 2018. It was the first run of the World Marathon Majors 2018/19 and had the gold label of the IAAF Road Race Label Events 2018 .
In the men's race, defending champion Eliud Kipchoge from Kenya set a new world record with his winning time of 2:01:39 hours and undercut the old record set by his compatriot Dennis Kipruto Kimetto at the 2014 Berlin Marathon by 1:18 minutes. It was the biggest improvement in a marathon world record since 1967, when Australian Derek Clayton broke the world record by 2:23 minutes.
Last year's winner, Gladys Cherono from Kenya , prevailed in the women's race in a track record time of 2:18:11 hours. The Ethiopians Ruti Aga and Tirunesh Dibaba in second and third also stayed below the old course record set by the Japanese Mizuki Noguchi with 2:19:12 hours in 2005. For the first time in history, three women undercut the 2:19 hour mark in one and the same race.
According to the organizers, the 2018 Berlin Marathon recorded 40,650 participants (28,377 men and 12,273 women) at the finish.
