Shogo Nakamura ( Japanese 中 村 匠 吾 Nakamura Shōgo ; born September 16, 1992 in Yokkaichi ) is a Japanese long-distance runner .

Career

Nakamura attended Ueno Kogyo High School in Iga (Mie) . In his last school year in 2010, he ran the 5000 meters in 13: 50.38 minutes, which made him the seventh best high school student in his country of all time.

After graduating from high school, Nakamura began studying economics at Komazawa University , where he participated in the popular Ekiden relay races for the university team during his four years . In his first two years he only took part in one of the three most important University Ekiden, at the national University Ekiden Championship 2011 ( English All-Japan University Ekiden Championship ) he contributed to the overall victory of his university with the third best section time and in the following season he was at the prestigious Hakone Ekiden with the third-best time on his stage - faster were Yuta Shitara and Suguru Osako - with Komazawa University third in the final ranking. In the third year Nakamura was used in all three big Ekiden on the first stage, in the Izumo Ekiden and the national University Ekiden championship in autumn 2013 he handed over while in the lead and in the Hakone Ekiden in early 2014 with 9 seconds behind in second place. According to his individual performances, his university team won the first two races and finished 2nd at the Hakone Ekiden. In his last university year, after the storm-related cancellation of the Izumo Ekiden, he won his section at the University Ekiden Championship as well as at the Hakone Ekiden. As in the previous year, his university had to settle for second place in the Hakone Ekiden after a victory in the former.

Off the Ekiden, Nakamura set up over 10,000 meters in the first half of 2012 and best times of 28: 22.59 min and 1:03:26 h in the half marathon. In 2013 he improved himself in the half marathon as the winner of the Japanese University Championships to 1:02:41 h, ran the best time over 10,000 meters in 28: 05.79 minutes and was fifth in the Japanese Championships over this distance. After being nominated for the Universiade 2013 in Kazan , he won bronze in the half marathon there and silver with the team after adding up the three best individual performances behind South Africa. The following year, Nakamura was nominated for the 2014 World Half Marathon Championships in Copenhagen and finished 28th with a best time of 1:01:57 h.

After graduating from university, Nakamura joined the corporate team at technology group Fujitsu in 2015 . In the further course of the year he improved his 5000 meter best time from high school days to 13: 43.14 min and ran over 10,000 meters with 28: 09.86 min close to his best performance. In 2016, he improved his best performance in the half marathon to 1:01:53 h and after being nominated again at the World Half Marathon Championships, which this time was held in Cardiff , he finished in 36th place in 1:04:49 h. Over 5000 meters it increased further to 13: 38.93 min. In the following year he won bronze over 5000 meters at the Japanese championships and stayed over 10,000 meters with 28: 16.01 minutes, not far above his best time.

In March 2018, Nakamura made his debut at the Lake Biwa Marathon , finishing 7th in 2:10:51 h over the marathon distance . In September he improved in the Berlin Marathon , which the Kenyan Eliud Kipchoge won in a world record time of 2:01:39 h, from fourth to 2:08:16 h. His start six months later at the Tokyo Marathon 2019 went less well , in which he and the leading group passed the half marathon mark in 1:02:04 h despite the cold and wet conditions, but could not keep up the pace in the second half and finally after 2 : 14: 52h crossed the target line. He got back on the road to success in September at the Marathon Grand Championship , the national qualifying competition for the Japanese marathon team at the 2020 Olympic Games in their own country , which was announced for the first time by the Japanese Athletics Association . Nakamura secured a place in the Olympic team by distancing his rivals Yuma Hattori and national record holder Suguru Osako in a close final and finally winning in 2:11:28 h with 8 seconds ahead of Hattori in muggy weather.

In early 2020, Nakamura improved to 1:01:40 h in the half marathon. In February he was nominated for the half marathon world championships in Gdynia , which were scheduled for the end of March , but which were postponed to autumn due to the COVID-19 pandemic .
