Career

Maeda spent her elementary and middle school years in Amagasaki and later attended Osaka-Kunei-Joshi-Gakuin High School in Osaka . In 2011, she ran at the middle school championships in her prefecture over 800 and 1500 meters in 2: 20.97 min and 4: 40.10 min, respectively, in second place. In her last school year, 2014, the girls' team at her school won the national Ekiden championships for high schools, As in the previous two years, Maeda was not used as a substitute. In the same year she ran 3000 meters in 9: 27.07 minutes.

After graduating from high school, Maeda joined the corporate team at Tenmaya Department Store in 2015 . In her first two years at Tenmaya, she ran distances up to the half marathon , improving over 10 kilometers from 33:15 minutes at the end of 2015 to 32: 43.42 minutes on the track in mid-2016 and in the half marathon in February 2016 the national company championships as 14th 1:12:50 h.

At the end of January 2017, Maeda made her debut at the Osaka Women's Marathon over the marathon distance , finishing in 12th place in 2:32:19 h. In the summer, she improved as the winner of the Hokkaidō Marathon in muggy weather to 2:28:48 h and thus qualified as the first woman for the Marathon Grand Championship , the first national qualification competition for the Japanese marathon team at the Olympic Games announced by the Japanese Athletics Association 2020 in your own country. She ended the year with 1:10:22 h and 7th place in the Sanyo Half Marathon, an all-women run in Okayama .

In January 2018, Maeda continued to improve to 2:23:48 h in second place behind her compatriot Mizuki Matsuda when she started again in Osaka . Then she was nominated for the Half Marathon World Championships three months later in Valencia, Spain , where she finished 35th in 1:12:09 h and, after adding up the three best individual results, fourth place with the Japanese team. At the Berlin Marathon in mid-September, in 2:25:23 h (7th place), for the first time she did not manage to increase the marathon distance, but in December she won the Sanyo half marathon in a best time of 1:09:12 h.

In March of the following year, in 12th place in the 2019 Tokyo Marathon in 2:31:42 h , Maeda was one of the athletes who did not cope well with the cold and wet conditions. In the middle of the year she ran the half marathon in Hakodate in 1:10:23 h behind her compatriots Mao Ichiyama and Yuka Ando in 3rd place. In September she won the 2020 Olympic Games as the winner of the Marathon Grand Championship in Tokyo . Maeda took the lead after about ten kilometers in a race that was initially very fast despite the muggy temperatures, also got rid of her last following rivals up to halfway and finally won clearly in 2:25:15 h - the second-placed Ayuko Suzuki reached the finish in 2:29:02 h with over three and a half minutes behind. In December, as in the two previous years, she started again at the Sanyo half marathon and this time increased her best time by four seconds as second behind the British Charlotte Purdue in 1:09:08 h.

In mid-February 2020 Maeda won the 30 kilometers in Ōme with 1:38:35 h and thus improved the course and national record of Mizuki Noguchi , who had won in 1:39:09 h in the year of her Olympic victory in 2004.
