Mao Ichiyama ( Japanese 一山 麻 緒 Ichiyama Mao ; born May 29, 1997 in Kagoshima Prefecture ) is a Japanese long-distance runner .

Career

Ichiyama started running at the end of her elementary school and later attended the Izumi Chuo High School ( Izumi Chūō Kōtōgakkō ) in Izumi (Kagoshima) . In 2015, she was unable to qualify for the finals at the national high school championships over 1500 meters in 4: 29.91 min and 3000 meters in 9: 48.66 min. The following year, 2016, she graduated from high school and then joined the company team at the underwear manufacturer Wacoal . She closed the year with best times of 9: 13.09 min over 3000 meters, 15: 44.33 min over 5000 meters and 32: 15.73 min over 10,000 meters; in addition, she set a new section record on her stage at Queen's Ekiden , the national Ekiden championship for company teams, in November .

In February 2017 Ichiyama won the Japanese cross-country championships and was then nominated for the World Cross-Country Championships in Kampala, Uganda , where she placed 39th at the age of 19. Later that year she came fourth in the Japanese championships over 5000 and 10,000 meters and ran over these distances with 15: 24.17 min and 31: 49.01 min and in the half marathon with 1:09:14 h best times.

In the spring of 2018 Ichiyama took 19th place at the World Half Marathon Championships in Valencia, Spain , and with the Japanese team she came in fourth after adding up the three best individual performances Fifth over 10,000 meters and tenth over 5000 meters.

Ichiyama made her marathon debut at the beginning of March 2019, and in the Tokyo Marathon she finished as the seventh woman in 2:24:33 h in rainy conditions. In doing so, however, she missed the direct qualification for the Marathon Grand Championship (MGC), the national qualification competition for the Japanese marathon team at the 2020 Olympic Games in her own country, which was announced for the first time by the Japanese Athletics Federation (JAAF) . Ichiyama then started again in the London Marathon seven weeks later over the marathon distance and undercut the 2:31:27 h required for another qualification option (two races on average under 2:28:00 hrs) as fifteenth in 2:27:27 hrs clear. In preparation for the MGC race in September, she ran in July at the half marathon in Hakodate with 1:08:49 h on the eighth place of the all-time Japanese best list. At the Marathon Grand Championship itself Ichiyama was initially responsible for a high pace in humid temperatures, but had to back off in the second half and missed the direct Olympic qualification in 2:32:30 h in sixth place. She ended the year in December with an improvement in her 10,000 meter best to 31: 34.56 min.

At the Kagawa Marugame Half Marathon in February 2020, Ichiyama missed her personal best by a few seconds after a quick start in fifth in 1:08:56 h. A month later, she started the Nagoya Marathon with the option of qualifying for the Olympics with a quick time, since according to the rules of the JAAF only the first two of the MGC races qualified directly for the Olympic team and the third-placed one was pushed out if an athlete undercut the fastest time achieved in the MGC qualifying period (2:22:23 h) in one of three domestic marathons ( Saitama Marathon , Osaka Women's Marathon , Nagoya Marathon). Ichiyama won in Nagoya in continuous rain in 2:20:29 h with a lead of over two minutes and was thus also faster than Mizuki Matsuda , who had presented in Osaka in January with 2:21:47 h.
