The Berlin Marathon 2019 (officially: BMW Berlin Marathon 2019 ) was the 46th edition of the annual running event in Berlin , Germany . The marathon took place on September 29, 2019. It was the last run of the World Marathon Majors 2018/19 and had the gold label of the IAAF Road Race Label Events 2019 .
In the men's category , the Ethiopian Kenenisa Bekele missed the world record set by Eliud Kipchoge in the same place last year by just two seconds with his victory time of 2:01:41 hours . His second-placed compatriot Birhanu Legese moved up to third place in the all-time world best list with 2:02:48 hours, Sisay Lemma completed the purely Ethiopian podium with 2:03:36 hours. The Austrian Peter Herzog was the best European in twelfth place with a time of 2:10:57 hours.
The women also saw an Ethiopian duel for victory, which Ashete Bekere won in 2:20:14 hours in the sprint against Mare Dibaba (2:20:21 hours). The Kenyan Selly Chepyego was third in 2:21:06, followed by Melat Yisak Kejeta , who has been eligible to start for Germany since spring 2019, was sixth overall in 2:23:57 hours on the all-time German best list in the marathon .
